Indigenes Cultures upon the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th Century

Nicaragua Styles:

Costa Rica and Nicaragua share a stylistic unity in the pre-Columbian period with the area called Gran Nicoya (see map above). This area was comprised by the southwestern part of Nicaragua and the northwestern part of Costa Rica.

The Spanish colonizers gave the country of Costa Rica its name due to the quality of the gold-work on the Caribbean coast.  Nicaragua was named after the Nicarao culture that occupied the western part of that country.

Gran Nicoya: As mentioned above, this area is comprised the western part of Nicaragua and the northwestern part of Costa Rica.

The scenes represented in the pottery give evidence to the fact that the women played an important role in the society holding political and religious positions.

It is worth highlighting the animal effigy vases, in these the head was modeled three dimensionally and for the rest of the body an engraving was used was frequently used. In a subsequent period censers were produced with the figure of an animal in the upper part. In some pieces a supernatural character can be observed in the animal representations, which possess with large teeth with protuberances from the head.  In the effigy vases of a jaguar, the back legs and the tail typically form a tripod upon which the piece is supported.

In the beginning, the burials were done in the hills and highland parts, the graves were in the form of conical pits or bell-shaped. In some cases circles of stones were placed at the entrance of the pit to mark the area. At a later stage these pits were covered with stones forming mounds. The dead body was placed bent and surrounded with offerings which included obsidian knives and pottery (sometimes jade and gold). Another type of burial consisted of putting the burnt remains of the dead body in an urn.

In the tombs found, frequently jades was found with designs which came from the Maya area to the north, sometimes re-worked to a local style. An example of this Mesoamerican influence can be seen in the Feathered Serpent/Plumed Snake.
